SHOU Teachers Invited to Attend FAO International Symposium on Fisheries Sustainability

On November 18-21, 2019, the International Symposium on Fisheries Sustainability, sponsored by FAO, was held at FAO Headquarters in Rome. At the invitation of FAO, SHOU sent its delegation composed of professor Yang Zhengyong from the College of Economics and Management; professor Tang Yi and associate professor Lv Ming from the College of Marine Culture and Law; professor Wu Wenhui and associate professor Jeevithan Elango from the College of Food Science and Technology. The aim of the symposium is to strengthen science policy connections.

As the highest-level and largest-scale FAO international symposium on fisheries sustainability in 2019, this symposium attracted about 500 representatives from the academic institutions, governmental agencies, intergovernmental organizations, and nongovernmental organizations of more than 100 countries. Welcome speeches were delivered by senior officials, including Director General of FAO, UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy, and other senior officials of the UN; senior officials of special-purpose institutions; Minister of Agriculture and Sea of Portugal; Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Products of Norway; and the senior officials of other countries. The symposium touched upon eight topics, including the status of global and regional fisheries sustainability and its influence on policies and management; sustainable fisheries; connections between biodiversity conservation and sustainable use; fisheries related to food safety and nutriology; consolidation of sustainable fisheries from tides to dining tables; policies on fishery economy; fishery management in environmental change; fishery information system and new technologies; opportunities for fishery policies in the 21st century, etc.
