In June and July, 2016, there were a number of continuous rainstorms in China, and floods occurred in many provinces. Since farming households are in urgent need of the knowledge on production recovery after disasters and reduction of secondary disasters, in order to minimize the loss of fisheries, the Eriocheir Sinensis Ecological Aquaculture Technique and Promotion Service Group under the SHOU Aquatic Farming Collaborative Innovation Center joined hands with the Herbivorous Fish Disease Prevention and Control Technology Service Group to take advantage of these two teams. The Fishery Science Service Group of the Shanghai Ocean University consisting of Ma Xuzhou, Lu Hongda, Chen Lijing and Tao Xianji went to the two main aquiculture areas of river crabs in seriously-flooded Jintan, Jiangsu and Dangtu, Anhui from July 26 to 30, to carry out the service work of introducing technologies to farmers.

On July 27, the members of the technology service group provided farmers with technical trainings separately for the existing problems after the flood in Jintan, Jiangsu province, according to their respective areas of expertise in respect of river crab cultivation, water plants cultivation, water quality improvement, disease prevention and control, etc., thus offering technical support for the recovery of production of river crabs in the disaster-effected areas.

Between July 28 and 30, the technology service group made a field observation of crab pond under the 40℃extreme weather. Some crab cultivators even waited at the road crossing very early, requesting the group to check their ponds and offer advice after learning that the group passed by. The group conducted discussions in many aquiculture areas. Farmers raised questions, and the service group offered their solutions. Because crabs are cultured in a scattered manner, so the aquiculture area is wide, and the group cannot provide service to all farmers. In this circumstance, the leaders of Dangtu Aquatic Products Bureau organized the aquaculture technicians of the main crab areas to convene a focused symposium, and the technicians passed the recommendations and the corresponding measures to the crab cultivators through mentoring activities.

This fishery technology service has drawn a high attention from the local government body. The head of the Jiangsu Jintan aquatic technology promotion station, Deputy Secretary Dangtu County CPC Commission, deputy county Mayor, agriculture committee director, aquatic bureau director, head of aquatic technology promotion station, etc. arrived on the site, and expressed their appreciation for the technical support for post-flood production recovery of fisheries provided by Shanghai Ocean University, and hoped them to often to come to provide services and guidance. The service group has made a good social benefit, and will produce a good economic benefit.
