SHOU Faculties and Students Participated in the7th World Fisheries Congress and Gave Reports

The 7th World Fisheries Congress was held in Busan, Korea from May 23 to 27, 2016. Researchers and experts from around the world, including Korea, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, Brazil, India, and China, gathered together and exchanged ideas on sustainable development of the fishery industry and security of marine products. Upon invitation of its organizing committee, Professors Song Liming and Lin Dongming from College of Marine Science, PhD candidates Tang Hao and Xu Luoliang, and master candidates Zhang Miao and Song Qi attended the congress.

The world fisheries congress can be dated back to 1991. It is organized by the World Aquaculture Society every four years. The first congress was convened in Athens, Greece in 1992, and then held in other places, including Brisbane Australia, Beijing China, Vancouver Canada, Yokohama Japan, and Edinburgh Scotland. The 7th congress was sponsored by Korean Society of Fishery and Aquatic Science, Busan municipal government and Korean Ministry of Ocean and Fishery, themed on “Opportunities and Challenges Facing Sustainable Development of Fisheries and Safety of Marine Products”. The congress was made up of five thematic conferences covering 37 sub-theme meetings, such as the role of genomics study in enhancing fishery management and protection, supervision over and evaluation of tuna fishery and its reduced concurrent catching, development of marine fishery in the context of global climate change, fishery and fish biology, sophisticated fishing gears and regulations promoting sustainable development of the fishery, assessment of population resources, life history in early times and change of its complementary quantity, and food science.

Professor Song Liming participated in discussions in the sub-theme meetings on supervision and evaluation of tuna fishery and its reduced concurrent catching, and sophisticated fishing gear and regulations on promoting the sustainable development of fishery. He also delivered speeches on “Mechanical Property of Circular Hook and Annular Hook” and “Impact of Environment Variables in Cook Islands Area on Concurrent Catching Rate of Wahoo. Lin Dongming participated in discussions in the sub-theme meetings on fishery and fish biology, and life history in early times and variation of its magnitude of recruitment, and reported his achievements on “Relationship between Gonad and Energy Accumulation in Muscular Tissue of Argentinean Squid and Ocean Surface Environment. PhD candidates Tang Hao and Xu Luoliang reported respectively on their achievements in “Impact of the Sedimentation Ability of Tuna Seine on Free Fish Population” and “Spatial Autocorrelation: Impact of the Statistical Approach on CPUE Standardization”. Master students Song Qi reported on Research of Ingestion Ecology of Euphausiid in Antarctic Peninsula in Summer and Winter with Stable Isotope, and Zhang Miao exchanged her views on poster concerning Impact of Sea Surface Temperature on the Habitat of Chilean Jack Mackerel.

Through exchange of ideas in the congress, SHOU well displays its research achievements in such disciplines as the fishery resources and fishing science and deepens understanding of development trend in management, evaluation, and preservation of the world fishery resources and food safety.
