Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture issued No. 2360 Announcement, granting approval to the new aquatic breed Eriocheir Sinensis Jianghai 21 jointly applied by SHOU and Shanghai Fisheries Institution after verification by National Review and Examination Commission for Aquatic Proto-species and Improved Breeds, breed registration number being GS-02-003-2015.

Prof. Wang Chenghui is guiding breeding on the bank of a pool

Breeding of Eriocheir Sinensis Jianghai 21 began in 2004. In accordance with the technical route of the complementary pyramiding breeding, the scientist established the basis population in odd year and even year respectively, took the growth speed, foot length and prong as the breeding indicator, first selected out the Type A with fast growth speed and long foot, and Type B with fast growth speed and good prong respectively, and then used the Type A as the female parent, and Type B as the male parent to generate the new breed. Eriocheir Sinensis Jianghai 21 effectively absorbs the typical traits of the male and female parents, featuring fast growing speed, attractive shape and high yield. It is now being bred in 14 provinces and cities nationwide, annual aquatic breeding area exceeding 150,000mu.

Eriocheir Sinensis Jianghai 21 has pooled the resources and talents from research institutions, fine-breed production units, technology promotion organizations, and companies and specialized aquaculture cooperatives. Unlike the conventional mode that the breeding unit begins selective breeding first and then the producing unit will apply, it builds up a breeding alliance pooling resources of the university and enterprise, and integrates breeding and promotion, thus creates a new breeding pattern of aquatic varieties that combines breeding, production, pilot test, application and economic benefits. This mode greatly improves conversion rate and application efficiency of the breeding results. Prof. Wang is the author and practitioner of such technical route of breeding, as well as chief person-in-charge and coordinator for such work.
