The 2nd Asia Fisheries and Aquaculture Higher Education Seminar Held in Shanghai Ocean University

On April 23-24, the 2nd Asia Fisheries and Aquaculture Higher Education Seminar under the theme of “Better Education, Better Discipline, Better Industry“ was held in our university. More than a hundred experts and scholars gathered in our university and jointly discussed fisheries and aquaculture higher education work in Asia Pacific region so as to promote sustainable development of fisheries and aquaculture industry in Asia.

President Cheng Yudong gave a welcome speech. He said, as have been pointed out in the “Vision and Action” statement in China’s “One Belt and One Road” Initiative, China would “actively promote cooperation in fields such as sea farming, offshore fishing, aquatic products processing, seawater desalination, marine bio-pharmaceutical, marine engineering and environment protection“, which would undoubtedly provide a great opportunity for further development of Asian fisheries and aquaculture and bring us more sound foundations and possibilities for cooperation.

Director Liang Weiquan from Shanghai Aquatic Products Office introduced fisheries development in China and fisheries situations in Shanghai. He said, Shanghai Municipal Government has paid high attention to fisheries development, kept innovative and enterprising and based on the actual situations in Shanghai, established the development strategy of accelerating Shanghai modern city fisheries industry, and the fisheries industry in Shanghai has realized strategic transformation from decentralizing to centralizing, from quantity-oriented to quality-centered, from production to ecological orientation and from product to service orientation. In recent years, fisheries infrastructure in Shanghai has been continually improved, fisheries technical support and guarantee capability gradually enhanced, fisheries safety monitoring standard continually improved, development room for fisheries increasingly expanded, ecological civilization construction for fisheries industry continually promoted and characteristics and highlights for Shanghai modern city fisheries constantly shown.

After the inauguration ceremony, Tatsuro Matsuoka from Kagoshima University, Prof. John Bostock from the University of Stirling and Prof. Huang Shuolin from Shanghai Ocean University gave theme lectures, respectively.

During the 2-day meeting, both foreign and Chinese experts entered into extensive discussions on current situations and positions of fisheries education, development and implementation of specialty courses and partnership relationship in university-industry cooperation.
