Our University Held Green Tide International Symposium for the First Time

From May 9 to 11, 2014, with the support of Shanghai University first-class discipline Marine Science Project, Shanghai Ocean University, State Oceanic Administration East China Sea Branch, State Oceanic Administration North China Sea Branch, Chinese Society for Oceanography Professional Committee of Oceanographic Survey, and Chinese Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Ocean Branch jointly held the first Green Tide International Symposium. Liu Kefu, Director of the State Oceanic Administration East China Sea Branch, and Huang Shuolin, Vice President of Shanghai Ocean University, made the welcoming speech. Hu Xiang, Chief Engineer of State Oceanic Administration North China Sea Branch, Cui Hailing, Deputy Director of Shanghai Municipal Ocean Bureau, Xu Ren, Director of State Oceanic Administration East China Sea Environmental Monitoring Center, Huang Juan, Deputy Director of State Oceanic Administration North China Sea Forecasting Center and Li Jiale, Assistant to the President of Shanghai Ocean University, among others, attended the meeting, the opening ceremony of which was hosted by Xie Jing, Director of Science and Technology Department of our university.

The theme of this meeting was to carry out in-depth discussion on the green tide disaster occurrence mechanism and to bring forward constructive suggestions on the effective control and administration of the green tide in the Yellow Sea by using the foreign researches on and the management technologies of green tide for reference. Over 60 experts, scholars and graduate students from Canada, the US, Australia, Korea, Japan and China participated in this meeting. Professor He Peimin, an expert in green tide algae research and chief scientist of the State Oceanic Administration public welfare project, on behalf of the project team, made a speech named Monitoring and mechanisum of early stage green tide blooming in the south Yellow Sea, which reflected our research level and strength on the green tide project and was highly evaluated by peer experts.

This meeting collected the latest results of both foreign and domestic research on green tide and carried out in-depth discussion of the key scientific problems, such as the occurrence mechanism and control strategies of green tide in the Yellow Sea of China. Excellent reports given by experts and the latest research results deeply attracted every participant and drew universal praises. The participating experts discussed some key and sensitive issues in an enthusiastic and friendly way. The profound academic atmosphere achieved the desired effect. The organization of this meeting plays a very important role in enhancing the academic circles' in-depth understanding of the green tide occurrence mechanism, and revealing the occurrence mechanism and controlling the outbreak scale of the green tide in the Yellow Sea of China as soon as possible.
