The release date:2014-05-24view:924Set

Internal Solitary Wave Propagation Observed by Tandem Satellites, an English paper written by Liu Bingqing as the lead author, a postgraduate of College of Marine Science admitted in 2012, was published in Geophysical Research Letters in March, 2014. The periodical is reputed as one of the flagships in the field of geosciences, ranking 11 among 172 SCI periodicals, impact factor being 3.982.

The paper demonstrated the innovative application of the data from two radar satellites of the European Space Agency (ESA), attracting its high attention. It had a thorough report on its official website in May, 2014.

Internal wave of the ocean is an extremely important phenomenon of the ocean, closely related to other disciplines like ocean hydroacoustics, underwater navigation, marine biology, marine optics, marine sedimentology, military oceanography and architecture under ocean. Since the advent of the man-made satellite in 1960s, it has been a frontier subject much studied by oceanologists. The paper makes creative use of image fusion technology and employs multi-source microwave radar satellite image that penetrates the cloud to inversely demonstrate the transmission speed of the internal wave in the northern part of the South China Sea.

Under guidance of her tutor, Liu is now extending the research direction into mixing layer of the ocean based on theories of hydromechanics and radar surveying.
